What's less often told is that the discovery was preceded by a security guard at the facility who had been logging the anomalous signal for months in his own personal notebook, convinced it was equipment interference that he was somehow responsible for missing. He'd mentioned it to a technician twice. Both times, it was attributed to pigeons nesting in the antenna.
When Penzias and Wilson eventually traced the signal and realized its significance, the guard's notebook — which he'd kept out of professional anxiety rather than scientific curiosity — contained some of the earliest consistent documentation of the phenomenon. His sketch made its way, through a chain of coincidences, to an actual engineer at the company. The redesigned device reduced a specific type of procedural error significantly. It's still in use in modified form today.
The salesman was eventually promoted. He never understood exactly what he'd done, only that the nurses he talked to had seemed frustrated, and he'd been bored enough to wonder why.

In the 1930s, a librarian at a small university in the Midwest misfiled a botanical research paper under the wrong subject heading.
